I have no idea what The Bridge was meant to accomplish, but the end result feels amateurish and shallow. For a film about suicide, it's surprisingly unmoving.
Amateurish because the interviews are handled so poorly. One jumper's parents are interrupted by their miniature dachshund, another's mother and sister bicker over minutiae, and the witnesses to a third have to deal with the inane interjections of their five-year-old and the flailing of their infant.
Shallow because, possibly due in part to the poor interviews, the connection between viewer and jumper is tenuous. There also doesn't seem to be any effort to structure the anecdotes meaningfully. One jumper's story brackets the film: We begin with an interview about him and end with footage of his jump. But apart from that, the film meanders from jumper to jumper, making little effort to connect them beyond their common end. There's no coherent message, nor any insight.
Some reviewers have slammed The Bridge as nothing more than morbid voyeurism. I didn't get that sense, but that, too, may be a product of the film's failure to connect me to its subjects. Even grindhouse fare like Saw makes some effort to develop its characters before offing them.

I keep touching the stove, as if expecting that this time I might not get burned. By which, of course, I mean I haven't yet stopped engaging in what passes for political discourse on the Internet. Yesterday I tried to point out a logical flaw in an a news column with a decidedly pro-Obama slant, and got shouted down as a degenerate Republican baby-rapist.
But I'm slowly learning. Rather than defend myself, I today posted a semi-literate rant about healthcare costs, stagnant wages, the 9/11 conspiracy, blood for oil, and Bush's drug use -- none of which had anything to do with the column's contents.
So far, 15 people have clicked "recommend" for that post.

I promised to send this along for a friend. I can't attend, but seems like a painless way to support a great organization: SAVE THE DATE: Cocktail Hour and Film Screening Mark your calendars for a very special fundraising event for the Rahman Limaj Scholarship Program (RLSP), on October 1, at 6:00pm at Foley Hoag LLP in the World Trade Center West. Cocktails and appetizers will be followed by a screening of a short film on the organization's work and a silent auction to raise money for the RLSP. Come bid on Celtics tickets and learn about the hands-on ways that the RLSP addresses female education in one of the poorest communities in former Yugoslavia. Cocktails and appetizers will be served at 6:00 with the film screening at 6:30. World Trade Center West is located at 155 Seaport Boulevard in Boston. Kindly RSVP to dhuang@foleyhoag.com or events@foleyhoag.com to help us plan appropriately. Learn more about the RLSP at www.rlsp.org, or by contacting us directly at 617-821-5044. Why do people assume that "F agrees with N" or "when G said X, he meant N" means "I agree with N"?
It's almost certainly not an Internet-specific phenomenon, but that's where I encounter it (I iz fail teh Intartruks). I suspect it's a combination of snappishness bred of anonymity and an unwillingness to actually read. In person, people are usually more charitable.
I hate feeling as if I have to clarify myself -- I'm not the idiot -- but I also hate leaving anyone with misapprehensions about what I believe or what I meant. Calling people idiots isn't my favorite tactic, either, as tempting as it gets.
As I've said before and will no doubt say again, I should simply stop trying to engage in Internet discourse.
